The Promises of Spring
“If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant: if we did not sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome.”
— Anne Bradstreet
A year of turmoil has shadowed the sun.
Loneliness, our constant companion.
But a new day is arriving.
As new growth kisses bare stems
and the frost recedes
a new hope arises.
For many of us, the last couple of years threw us upside down and turned us inside out. We have been forced to remain inside without the healing embrace of others. It’s as though a dark winter set in for the long haul. Even the days filled with sunshine, we found ourselves weeping.
But just as the spring flowers can’t bloom without the dormant months of winter, we too cannot blossom without the challenges of life. There is a great fragrance and sweetness to life that is gained when you move through seasons of strife. Rather than experiencing the storm as a threat, we can choose to see it as an opportunity to hone our skills. To slow down and breath deeply. To reach into the deepest parts of our souls. To reflect and address the pain.
If we choose to allow the seasons of darkness to consume us, we may one day find ourselves buried deep in the cold, dark soil. The only way of survival… an extremely long and hard journey to dig and claw ourselves out. And that is NOT what we are here for.
As this spring quickly approaches it does not only have to be a time the flowers bloom, but can also be an opportunity for us all to stir the soil of our hearts and minds. To sort through the remnants of what a dark and long hibernation has left us with. It’s time to pull out the weeds and begin feeding the soil with the rich nutrients of a wholistic life.
