Natural First Aid Kit for Kids

travel size for on the go adventures

It wasn’t until my 4 year old slipped into some poison oak on a nature walk that I realized I was completely unprepared. As I began to think about what I would actually need in case of an emergency, it felt a bit overwhelming. I knew I wanted to be mindful of the environment when choosing products as well as select items that were as natural and/or as organic as possible. While reading up on natural remedies I learned A LOT. The deeper I dug, the more I felt I had to share this with my fellow parents. There are so many great healing + soothing options for bites, stings, scrapes, etc. The items I’ve chosen here are what I felt would be best for my family as well as things I could find that would be travel/compact size. There are alternative options to some of these natural remedies so if you have an aversion to a scent or allergies to some ingredients, there are plenty of alternatives out there!

01 Blue Lizard Mineral Sunstick // Quick cheek and nose application that doesn’t leave their faces looking chalky white.
02 Maire’s Poison Ivy Bar Soap // Natural soap specific for removing the oils that ultimately create the rash and itch.
03 Swiss Army Pocket Knife // this comes is such a necessary tool. My husband carries a larger one around but I would say this is a necessity for a first aid kit on the go. It has tweezers for removing splinters and stingers as well as a basic knife and scissors.
04 Lavender Essential Oil // When looking for bee sting remedies I learned that lavender oil can be a pain reliever for a multitude of injuries. It’s a natural antibiotic and antiseptic so it is great for healing minor wounds. Plus the benefits that it reduces stress and smells amazing.
05 First Aid Tape // Great for taping gauze to the skin and doesn’t hurt so much when removed.
06 Self Adhering Bandages // These are great for when you need to cover a larger surface area.
07 Hand Sanitizer // This is an absolutely necessary item to carry in your kit. Not only because our kids like to pick up every half used lollipop and candy wrapper but in case there is an ouchie that needs to be addressed, clean hands are a must! Also, this lavender one linked here is my so yummy smelling. Another good option is EO Lavender Hand Sanitizer which you can buy in bulk.
08 Aloe Vera Gel // This is another one of those all healing items. This Brand (Fruit of the Earth) is 100% aloe and is free of dyes. Aloe vera gel is not only good for sunburns but a multitude of things. It provides some relief for mosquito bites, bee stings and various bug bites and helps in the healing process of minor crapes, cuts and abrasions.
09 Repel Bug Spray // Rated as one of the best performing natural bug sprays. If your kids are under 3, I would recommend Kids Herbal Armor Repellent.
10 Stasher Stand Up Bag // If you are not already familiar with the Stasher brand, let me introduce you! I promise you will be life long friends. ;) These silicone reusable bags are not only an awesome alternative to using plastic ziplocs but they can be used for travel, packing and even a mini first aid kit. The stand up version linked will hold all of the items in this list.
11 Patch Bamboo Bandages // Latex free and biodegradable, these bandaids are not only environmentally friendly but also are packaged so well. They offer activated charcoal, aloe vera, and coconut oil enriched options as well.
12 Brave Soldier Antiseptic Ointment // I discovered this in my hunt to find the right items for this first aid kit. While I don’t want to say I want one of us to get a scrape, I can’t wait to try this. If you aren’t queasy looking at injuries, check out the before and after in the reviews of this item. SO GOOD.
13 Amber Glass Bottles // These 2oz bottles are great for keeping this travel sized! I’ve poured half my Repel Insect repellent in one and filled another with water. Water in spray form is great for getting a scrape cleaned out without having to touch it.
14 Burts Bees Lip Balm // This is the go to chapstick in our home. It smells good and heals quickly. If your child’s lips are VERY chapped this can cause some minor stinging and tingling.
15 Sterile Gauze Pads // These are great to have on handy in case a scrape larger than a bandaid occurs. Use the first aid tape to keep the gauze in place. Or if the injury is larger, wrap the self adhering bandages over the gauze. Be sure to clean the wound thoroughly before applying.

Sticker Links:

  • Vinyl letters : I used these on the amber glass bottles in case you like things as organized as I do. Plus you don’t want to mix up bug spray and water when cleaning a wound. ;) They’re also great for gift tags, labeling bins and a multitude of other things.

  • First Aid Sticker // Quick Tip: Be sure to apply this to the high gloss, clear side of the silicone as the textured side will not allow the sticker to stay long term.

Quick Tips:

  • Don’t carry the entire container of bandaids. Always stock a few but leave the rest at home.

  • You only need one roll of medical tape and one roll of the self adhesive bandage.

  • Pull out a few gauze pads and leave the box at home.

  • If you’re really wanting to travel light, cut the poison oak soap into cubes so you don’t have to bring the entire bar.

  • A great add in item would be some disposable gloves for additional sanitation.

  • You can use any bag that fits all these items but the heavy duty and easy to clean nature of the silicone Stasher bags (mentioned above) can’t really be beat. If you choose to use a different bag, I would recommend something durable or even waterproof if possible. That way when you pull the bag out to actually use it, you don’t have to worry about stains, dirt or possible moisture ruining your bag or items.
